Pad control Labels

I would like to be able to replace the captions on the pad buttons of the controll pad something like below. I believe this can be done in the data .js files , but I really don't know how to set about doing this . Is there some kind of sand box environment I could use to find out how this stuff works or perhaps some pointers as to how to set about doing this.

If there were an inline method of captioning the buttons would be much better

You do not need to modify a js file. All aspects of the pad control are adjustable using the API.
