Snap area randomly stops working

Open dcoletto opened this issue 11 months ago • 4 comments

I already tried using both rectangle and rectangle pro, issue is the same, even after reinstalling: after some time, snap area stop appearing (and working completely) on both internal and external display.

This doesn't seems to be related to any specific app not "time" or any other operation, it stops to work completely randomly. It starts working again after any interaction with rectangle UI (opening settings, using a shortcut from the menu bar, opening log view, anything UI related). It seems like some "listener" process is killed (or crashes) so reopening the UI causes it to restart.

I tried getting logs, but if the log view is open the issue NEVER happens, so is there any way to save logs in a file without manually opening the log view?

This issue happens to me around 10 to 20 times a day (in about 8 to 14 hours of daily usage) so I can easily reproduce the issue, but I don't have any clue on what is causing it

Thanks for the detailed report. There is no separate process within Rectangle/Pro for this, so it would point to macOS simply not sending accessibility/event information to Rectangle Pro when this happens. Sometimes things like this can happen when there's interference on the event stream causing a bit of instability with 3rd party apps on macOS. Unfortunately, when I've come across similar scenarios in the past, there hasn't been an effective solution to automatically fix it.

One thing that you could try is removing the accessibility privileges for all apps in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility, and add back in Rectangle Pro first.

This isn't in Rectangle Pro at the moment, since there hasn't been a need (you're the first to report this issue). There's potential that all that we would be able to obtain from logs is that macOS isn't sending accessibility event information anyway, but I'll consider adding alternative logging capabilities if it makes sense to walk that path.

I'll see if I can think of anything else that would help us get to the bottom of it.

So, possibly good news here! I tried to disable all apps on accessibility and re-enable them all with rectangle as the first one. It seems like nothing has actually changed. BUT! disabling all the apps I am not having the issue anymore (maybe I need to test it more). I tried to mix and match all the apps, and it seems like Logi Option + is the culript. After disabling it, I am not experiencing the issue anymore. Again, I need some more time for testing but hey, some hour elapsed and it is still working. Will keep you updated!

Sadly I celebrated too early :( It seems like it is working better, but the issue is not totally fixed. I am still experiencing random "stops" of the snap feature. I will try to keep the log window open for a couple days, since from my previous tests it seems like the problem is not occurring when the log window is open. Maybe if this is working you could add an option to keep a very small window always open, for people like me having this issue? I really enjoy rectangle but this very small problem is killing the experience :( Again, I will keep you updated anyway!

Sure, keep me posted. I'll consider the window workaround.
