Handling multiple versions of Lua

So the current version of Luerl implements Lua 5.2. I am migrating towards Lua 5.3 now and it it's there I will continue my development. Some of the things maybe importable to a 5.2 branch. What is the best way to keep track of both versions? Have a separate 5.2 branch cherry-pick is my idea. Is this ok?
