Restoring an archive using the (undocumented?) back-dating API would complete the loop for this project.

Looks like it requires an appservice, and it's as simple as including a backdated ts parameter for each message.

There's a simpler approach in matrix-org/matrix-doc#2716, but as I understand it currently only registered appservices support backfilling with Synapse / the ts parameter.

If there was any progress on this enhancement, I would be interested to read about it! archiving and restoring rooms would be awesome in matrix.
