Agree with @wking, starting somewhere and defining a versioned API shouldn't hurt anyone. We can't just wait because we're not at the point to _fully stabilize_ (other projects broke backward...

It's happening the same on overlay.. I'm going to reopen this to track this bug and see if Docker can better handle this scenario
