Send empty string with cmd ?

While using the cmd function, I'm trying to send an empty string (''). In this case I receive "> > " without any newline characters. Instead if I send any character (e.g. "a") I obtain something like "> a\n> "

Why in the first case the newline is removed or not present? any idea?
