Layout are defined in distill.pub framework and I don't think they have such for smaller but various from wider as you point out.

knitr allows you to chnage the size of you images using chunk options but I understand why a new layout could be interesting.

As it is not in distill.pub JS directly, this would need to be defined in the R package itself.

I'll note that as a feature request.
