java.lang.RuntimeException: org.msgpack.UnpackException: parse error at server.sl:453

I cannot get armitage to run, I've tried it on both ubuntu 16.04 and the lastest debian build. Please assist, I'm not the only one having the problem. TrustedSec is trying to find a fix for this as well for their armitage installer in ptf.

running armitage or teamserver produces the following error java.lang.RuntimeException: org.msgpack.UnpackException: parse error at server.sl:453

I have tried editing the gem.lock and changing to different versions of msgpack to no avail. I've tried different versions of ruby, I've tried all the suggested remediation I could find while googling this issue.
