“x” turns into “×” between numbers

Hi! When I use the Inter font from Google Fonts (in WordPress), if I type something like 17.5 x 3.5, the normal letter x changes automatically into the multiplication sign ×. Is there a way to stop that or turn this feature off? I just want to keep the plain “x”. Thanks!

This was changed in v4.1 released in this repo on 2024-11-15. https://github.com/rsms/inter/releases/tag/v4.1
See notes: Removes NxN -> N×N transformation in calt on popular request

Google Fonts has an older version (2024-05-24) which still has this.

Work-arounds:

  • host the updated fonts yourself
  • insert a character such as nobreakspace or zerowidthnobreakspace, etc.

Which will break the text run and prevent the replacement.

EDIT: I forgot - you can also use the CDN hosted version of Inter. See the front page of this repo for instructions.
