Oldstyle numbers
I just recently discovered Inter and got completely salivating over all the contextually alternative typographic features available. Awesome work!
But I didn't see any oldstyle figures. It's a personal preference of mine and one of the first things I check whenever I encounter a new font - does it have oldstyle figures?
Have I missed something? Is it an intentional omission, or more of a "nobody asked for this" or "it's would be a cool thing, but we are prioritizing other features with the limited bandwith we got".
If any of the latter, consider this my +1 and wish for this feature. Sadly, I'm not skilled enough with font designing and software to contribute.
I suppose this is what you mean by oldstyle numbers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Text_figures
Are there examples of sans serif fonts with oldstyle numbers out there? If so, could you link to some of them, please?
Yes! For body text this is the numbers corresponding to lowercase, while lining figures are equivalent to ALL CAPS. Just a typographic nerd thing :)
As for a couple of sans serif fonts that has them:
- Source Sans pro (google font) - You have to specify the old-style numbers, default is lining
- Merriweather sans (google font) - Has only oldstyle numbers available
- Museo sans (font squirrel) - Default is old-style numbers, have to specify lining
In css, you specify old-style numbers with either font-variant: oldstyle-nums;
or font-feature-settings: "onum";

The fork called Inter Alia has old-style numerals, though I’m unhappy with the proportions (e.g. 〈1〉 serif too wide, either 〈35〉 descend too far or 〈4〉 not enough).
