Can I use veriables that differ per directory?

First of all: Love your work, works like a charm.

We have a directory structure:

project/mkdocs.yml
             docs/
                       north/
                       west/
                       south/

In files in the sub directories we like to use a variable {{ areacode }} which would vary per directory. Is that possible?
