Error in get_inat_obs: Your search returned too many results

Hi! I am looking to use iNaturalist data for searching for observations in specific areas, but I keep getting the following error code:
Your search returned too many results, please consider breaking it up into smaller chunks by year or month. Is there any way to avoid this? Even when I set maxresults=1000 or even =1, I still am getting this error code.
