Shouldn't we recommend people use discussions in their repo instead? Less collaborative for sure, but most maintainers don't use the forum.

I agree to suggest discussions instead. I would like to migrate from the forum and soft-deprecating with small steps like removing from the docs here is a good start.

There's a possibility that this will need to be reversed or changed in the face of de-risking from over reliance on GitHub, but for the moment, simpler is better.

We could phrase it in a less GitHub-focussed fashion. "The discussion tools that your Git platform provides, like GitHub discussions for GitHub".
