Note that you don't have do worry about debugging anything on Linux or Windows: https://github.com/root-project/root/pull/15426

So at this point it's a macOS-only problem :+1:

Note that LCG packages has the same problem, and didn't solve it yet either. They ship openSSL for the macOS builds, and for Linux they always use distro packages (according to Andre from private chat). But it's low priority for them, because macOS is not a relevant production platform.
