Preserve accuracy of convoluted shapes

Vector fields that distort the curvature of shapes quickly turn into jagged blobs as the number of points plotted is not enough to capture the twists and turns in the shape. (see Math.cos(y)i + Math.sin(x)j) An obvious solution would be to increase the number of points plotted (which is user controllable already), but it is unclear how to pick how many points to plot, and no matter what the choice, the end result is inevitable. Perhaps the solution is to dynamically scale the number of points based on ?? I am not sure.
