Layout of topic menus

The subtopic menu under Mathematics or under Physics is arranged in two or three columns (at least on my screen). When items are lined up in columns, most users would expect the ordering to be from top to bottom in the first column, then top to bottom in the second column, and so on. But instead the topics go left to right in the first row, then left to right in the second row, etc., which makes it harder to visually find topics alphabetically.
