Topics set for the first time

If one edits a series and adds topics for the first time, we should pass those along to the talks of that series that also have no topics set. Or at least have a mechanism to do do that.

Would there be room on the "Edit series" page, to the right of the topics entry box, for a checkbox with text to its right saying "Overwrite topics of future talks"?

The checkbox would be unchecked by default, but if a user checked it, and edited the series' topics, and clicked "Save", then the topics would transfer to all future talks. This is slightly different from what you are suggesting in that it would apply also to talks that already have topics set.
