How to uninstall

Open FWDekker opened this issue 2 years ago • 6 comments

Thank you for creating this tool. It works great :-)

Would it be possible to add instructions on how to uninstall the tool after it has been installed? I'm not experiencing issues, but would like to (temporarily) uninstall ModOrganizer for one specific game anyway. It looks like it's sufficient to remove the directory where ModOrganizer was installed by the tool, and to check file integrity in Steam to undo the tool's changes, but is that all?

Perhaps my issue is that I'd like to understand better how this tool works and what it changes. I think a short summary of how the tool works in the README would be very useful. :-)

I would also like to know how to properly uninstall this, as I've uninstalled the related game and no longer need this on the PC.

I would also like to know this. I believe it's important to have a way of uninstalling everything installed by this since disk space can be quite valuable on a Steam Deck.

For now the easiest way to do a manual uninstall is to remove the Steam redirector. This can be done by:

  • If you're not blocking game updates in any way, simply check the integrity of the game files
  • If you're blocking updates you'll have to remove the redirector manually:
    1. Right click the game on Steam > Installed Files > Browse Game Files
    2. Locate the game launcher executables. They should be two files with almost the same name, but one of them prefixed with an underscore. eg.: SkyrimLauncher.exe and _SkyrimLauncher.exe
    3. Remove the redirector by deleting the file without the underscore, eg: delete SkyrimLauncher.exe
    4. Restore the original game launcher by removing the underscore from its name. eg: rename _SkyrimLauncher.exe to SkyrimLauncher.exe

The steps above will make Steam return to its original behaviour of running the game launcher instead of MO2. Removal of actual mod files will vary depending on whether or not you're using a portable MO2 install and on where you selected to install MO2.

Thanks for the reply!

Your answer is sufficient to launch the game instead of MO2, but I also want to remove any other files and undo any other modifications when I uninstall something.

For example, looking at the scripts in a bit more detail, it looks like an additional version of Java is installed, the script extender is added, xdg-mime is invoked (on the Linux system), and there's a bunch of game-specific workarounds being applied. I think there should be a procedure (either a script or explained in text, but preferably the former) that undoes each of these changes, presumably with prompts where undoing may not be desired (e.g. not all users may want to remove the script extender).

Of course, the need for a proper uninstaller is fully acknowledged.
