Mods are not being loaded when game launches

  • The installation script had no issues being installed
  • i added global write and read permissions for the game directory and the compdata via chmod +rw

I was experiencing a similar issue: MO would start, the game would load, but trying to load a saved game would alert me that certain mods were no longer available. Similarly, if I tried to "Sort" the mod list, and run LOOT, it would complain that certain mods weren't being found in the proper directory.

The work-around I found was to edit the run.sh script used to start MO. The command specifies the Proton version with the --protonver flag. I believe by default it is set to 5.*. I changed that to 5.0*, and things are working as expected. The only other version of Proton 5.* I have it 5.13, which seems to not play nicely with this setup.

In an example setup, MO is installed to "/mnt/drive/games/mod-organizer-2":

  • Edit the shell script found at "/mnt/drive/games/mod-organizer-2/run.sh"
  • Change --protonver 5.* to --protonver 5.0*
  • Save-and-quit the file, start up MO.
  • A dialog box will pop up, asking to choose an instance. In my case, choosing the top option used my already-configured instance. 2021-04-24-161412_527x358_scrot

Edit: I have three different instances of MO: 1 for Skyrim SE, 1 for Oblivion, and 1 for Fallout: New Vegas. I have verified it works with all of them.

Edit 2: It seems, at least in Skyrim SE, that while everything else seems to work, something doesn't work as expected with the voice audio: dialogue and shouts. I'm not sure if this is a problem with a mod I have (though, I haven't updated the mods since I last played in November), or a missing dependency.

I may have celebrated too soon. Seems audio for music and voices doesn't work for any of the games.

That is an Xaudio issue. Using faudio will solve this problem. Ostensibly, making xaudio native in the launchers should fix it, but some injectors utilize those dlls and effectively make that tweak moot.

I got the same issue. The mods are not loaded :( I dont really know what is happening. Maybe I use the wrong proton version in one or both steam and run.sh. Also, Skyrim SE does not run on Steam with Proton 5.0 but it works on 5.13 and 6.*

Same issue here as well. In my case when using the default 5.0 proton version MO2 won't even start. Using 5.13 or 6.* has it starting, but mods aren't loaded.

I had the same problem you have, in my case in Fallout 4. It did not matter whether I installed mods with MO2, Vortex or directly to the game data folder - they would not load.

I managed to get it working this way:

  1. install mods however you like
  2. run the game, open in-game mods menu, accept all terms & conditions. show load order
  3. mark check-boxes next to the mods you would like to run
  4. exit the game
  5. edit Fallout4.ini, fix ArchiveInvalidation

After all the steps above I was able to install more mods and I did not have to enter mods menu again. It just started working after that.

It could also be a case of the plugins.txt file being in the wrong spot. That's an issue I recently had.

I run steam with this from the commandline, and MO from there, which works for me with audio: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 steam
