note to self: when we get to this look at https://github.com/rocicorp/repc/pull/203 for some things that changed

integration tests would have been REALLY helpful with https://github.com/rocicorp/repc/pull/256. the tests are getting complicated enough and there's enough set up that it would be better to have black box tests.
