What did you expect to happen?

should return commit-harsh or any meaningful info for me to detect the version

How can we reproduce it (as minimally and precisely as possible)?

I fixed a number of issues with holmes version in #893. Before testing please make sure you uninstall holmes and don't have any old holmes binaries from other sources on your PATH
