Greek letters encoded instead of converted

Zotero items that contain Greek letters (example) are encoded as β in the .bib file that AutoZotBib exports. Is this intended? Zotero's own export and the Zotero-autoexporting addon both convert it $\beta$.

The β leads latexmk 4.43a into the Package inputenc Error: Unicode char \u8:╬▓ not set up for use with LaTeX. Tested on Win7 with MiKTeX 2.9. Can also try MacTeX on Mavericks.
