Can quotefix documentation list if you can use this on a per account basis?
Apologies for abusing the issue tracker like this.
On the python-tutor mailing list we just got a mac user who is used to top quoting. I suggested that he use this plugin, because right now the poor soul is editing things by hand. He's only interested in using this app if he can set things up so this works for one account, but not all of his accounts -- as most of the time he is required to top post. I don't have a mac, so I cannot check and see if what he wants is possible -- or indeed the default. If it is possible, then it is something that you might want to list on http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/40735/quotefix to encourage wider adoption.
Thank you for a very useful app.

Don't worry about "abusing" the issue tracker :-)
It's not possible to select a particular account using QF, so it's all or nothing.
However, with the plug-in installed it's possible to override the top posting on a per-message basis using the Alt/Opt key when replying to a message. This works both ways: if quote fixing is enabled, it will be temporarily disabled by using Alt/Opt, and vice versa.
So the user could install Quotefix, disable the quote fixing by default (which means that it will always top post by default), and for specific messages (like the mailing list) they could temporarily override it (that it, allow for bottom posting) by using Alt/Opt.
I hope that makes sense? This is the setting I mean (which for me is enabled by default, because I want to bottom-post by default):

It would still require user interaction (because they have to remember to press down Alt/Opt), but perhaps that's manageable.
Thank you very much. It seems perfect to me, as a per message behavioural change seems even more reasonable than making a new account for the places that want bottom posting. I have forwarded a link to this issue to the user involved suggesting that he come here and add to this issue if he has any questions.
Thank you once again.
HI, I'm the Mac user that Laura (lac22) mentioned.
I have downloaded and installed the plug-in but it does not seem to work at all. Is there some preference I need to turn on/off in my regular mail settings?
The install is recognized as I can see the preferences pane and the Enabled option shows in the Mail menu, but when I reply to emails the behaviour is the same no matter whether it is enabled or not.
JohnFP please tell him what OS version you have if my idea does not fix things.
from reading http://www.macworld.com/article/1154707/quotefix_for_mail.html I think you need to do: (pasted from that article, read it first, remember that I do not own a mac)
(The simplest way to do so is to quit Mail, launch Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities), and then run the following two commands:
defaults write com.apple.mail EnableBundles -bool true defaults write com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion 3
but you may already have done this and so have a different problem, in which case apologies.
I am using Mountain Lion (10.9.5) and I followed the instructions in the Readme including the two commands in Terminal. No errors were signalled.
@JonFP one thing I didn't realise which may be a bit of a complication is the Signatures setting "Place signature above quoted text":

If that's enabled, it will interfere with QF being able to work properly. However, given that you normally want to top-post I can imagine that you don't want to disable it.
FWIW: if you can see the "Enabled" flag in the Mail menu, it means the plug-in loaded properly.

Hi Robert,
I disabled that feature and it does indeed make a difference. The top-post now works as you can see from this response.
Sadly the use of the Alt/Option key still has no effect. If I disable Quotefix from the Mail menu then I get my normal behaviour - enable it and it now works as designed. I’ll just have to remember to manually enable it before responding to lists that care about such things.
For now I can live with this behaviour - my signature is not vital for most of my emails. I do need to talk to Apple though because it seems to me I should be able to have that setting relate to a specific account, just as the signature itself does. But change it for one account and it affects all of them. That seems like a bug to me.
