How do you configure it with scrapy-redis?
Out of curiosity, what is the approach for this? Is it using a module-level global variable to know whether or not it's the first execution?
`POWERTOOLS_` looks good enough to me because the packages prefix is `lambda-powertools-` and using lambda as prefix (as in `LAMBDA_POWERTOOLS_`) might be redundant.

The `re2.cpp` file is generated via `cython` from the `re2.pyx` file. Check if regenerating the file with `cython` fixes your issue by running `make`.
