Very strange indeed! FWIW, the file appears as UTF-8 in vim, and if I add non-ascii characters to it (like “éâ” or “臭小孩”), vim still says it's UTF-8, but chardet...
So [I posted about this on reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/vim/comments/5npdia/vint_breaks_syntastic_in_macvim_but_not_in/dcdpmjx/), and somebody helped me get one step closer to the answer: If I launch GUI vim from the Finder, I get the error....
**EDIT:** @lcd047 [figured it out!](https://github.com/vim-syntastic/syntastic/issues/1945#issuecomment-272633134) It's the `LC_CTYPE` environment variable. Still don't know what to do about it, though. *** So I've been investigating this problem a little further. @lcd047...
So @lcd407 totally figured it out. The problem is that Finder doesn't preserve locales. If I set `let g:syntastic_vim_vint_exe = 'LC_CTYPE=UTF-8 vint'`, then everything works fine I'm reopening this issue...

This appears to be a deliberate (albeit peculiar) design choice for short search terms. The relevant code is under `lib/fuzzy_match/similarity.rb`: ```ruby def satisfy?(needle, threshold) best_score.dices_coefficient_similar > (threshold || 0) or...
Ah. How about Option 3: Stick with Dice for all search terms? While I agree that levenshtein works better than dice for very short search terms > FuzzyMatch::Score::PureRuby.new('tit','tat') => (dice=0.00000,lev=0.66667)...
