[FEATURE] Expose timeout_ms to user

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. timeout_ms is set to 500 ms by default, and cannot be configured by a user, if I understand correctly.

Describe the solution you'd like Sometimes 500 ms is not enough. Could this parameter be exposed to a user-facing configuration / parameter?
