Instead of "a variety of ways" how about something about "real-world code examples"? 
This is just how block themes work, currently. There is no restoration to fallback to as the theme's front-page template is essentially blank.

Went with "Choose logo", and also updated the tooltip to not conflict with the block toolbar. 
It shouldn't be programmatically lowercased for sure.
