Sticky element disappears after scrolling past a certain point

I'm not sure if this is a feature or a bug, but I'd like to disable or at least fine tune it. Even on your demo page this occurs. As I scroll down the page the element will eventually unsticky itself and get scrolled away. Inspecting the element shows me that the top attribute will hold steady as I scroll down but then suddenly drop and keep dropping past zero into negative values the further I scroll.

I should note that on my own site the element disappears sooner (i.e. at a smaller scroll position) the shorter the browser window is.
