Yeah, just improve https://ddev.readthedocs.io/en/stable/users/extend/customization-extendibility/#providing-custom-environment-variables-to-a-container - I've been meaning to explore this feature of docker-compose and didn't get it done yet.

BTW, ddev v1.19.0-alpha4 is out, so this should be easily testable there.
Just a note that after v1.19.0 release this is high priority to get in and also to make into a `ddev get` addon.

You tried adapting https://github.com/drud/ddev-contrib/tree/master/docker-compose-services/headless-chrome right? That works (amd64 only). I'm sure it would need adaptation for your use case. But it should be a good example.
