Zotero is not responding
Debug log ID
D
What happened?
After I downloaded the 6.7.154 version and installed it in my zotero and clicked restart now, my zotero just went blank in the main window (that contains the list of all the papers) and I cannot click on anything. After a while, it just said zotero not responding...can anyone help me with it? I have stored so many stuffs in zotero. I am so afraid this is going to ruin my library
Hello there @zoe667,
Hope you're doing well! @retorquere
is here to help you get the most out of your experience with Better BibTeX. To make sure he can assist you effectively, he kindly asks for your cooperation in providing a debug log – it's like giving him the key to understanding and solving the puzzle!
Getting your debug log is a breeze and will save us both time in getting your problem resolved or the new feature you'd like implemented. Trust me, it's way quicker than discussing why it's important.
How to Share Your Debug Log:
-
If the issue involves specific references, citekey generation, or exports, just right-click on the relevant item(s) and choose "Better BibTeX -> Submit Better BibTeX debug log" from the menu.
-
For other issues, follow these simple steps:
- Restart Zotero with debugging enabled (Help -> Debug Output Logging -> Restart with logging enabled).
- Reproduce the problem.
- Select "Send Better BibTeX debug report..." from the help menu.
Once you hit that submit button, you'll get a special red debug ID. Just share that with @retorquere
in this issue thread. If the question is regarding an export, don't forget to include what you see exported and what you expected.
By sharing your debug log, you're giving @retorquere
a clearer picture of your setup and the items causing the issue. It's like a superhero cape for him – he can swoop in and tackle the problem much faster.
We totally get that your time is valuable, and we appreciate your effort in helping @retorquere
help you. You might be surprised at how much this simple step speeds up the whole process.
Thanks a bunch!
PS: If the Debug Log menu does not appear, or it does not send the debug log
A fallback option is available under "Help" > "Send debug log to file.io".
Your library is safe. I can look at it in an hour, please restart zotero and after start, choose "send to file.io" from the help menu, and post the ID you get. Then you can disable BBT until I figure out what's wrong.
Thank you! I actually cannot click on anything after i started zotero, it completely freezed. I learned to safe open it (by using Shift tab when open the zotero) so that all addons been blocked. I removed BBT and zotero works now for me. But I still wish to install BBT.
Yesterday i tried the latest version of BBT, it installed fine but cannot be detected by Obsidian zotero integration, that's why I decided to try a previous version of BBT today. And Then it went like this.
Will send the io file now. Hope it can be solved.

Can't read those, and I don't support older versions of BBT. What operating system do you use?

I think you are emailing something -- attachments don't show up on github if you reply by email.
But screenshots don't help. Close zotero, open a terminal (cmd) window, type
C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -ZoteroDebugText > zotero.txt
and attach zotero.txt here after zotero starts and hangs
D905231851
These debug log IDS D<number>
are no help -- they go to the Zotero team, I have no access.
partial log
there must be more than this. Try
C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -ZoteroDebugText > zotero.txt 2>&1
all output should go to a file called zotero.txt
. Please attach it here, don't paste its content into the issue.
And no screenshots please. They don't help usually.
after I input the code in terminal, where should I find the zotero.txt? I searched and seemed find nothing...
In the directory where you typed the command
do you mean terminal? Where is the directory for that...I just use "window + x" to call the terminal out and have no idea where its directory is
Type
cd %UserProfile%\Desktop
before you type the zotero command and the file will appear on the desktop
I have redirected my repository to desktop, but after I paste and execute zotero code, there is no new file appear on my desktop...
In what way have you redirected your repository to the desktop? I hope you didn't move your Zotero directory there?
I meant
type
cd %UserProfile%\Desktop
press enter, and then enter the earlier command
Does
cd C:\Users\zyson\Desktop
work?
Yes I used this way below to redirect to desktop
cd C:\Users\zyson\Desktop

Ah OK, and no zotero.txt
? If you type
echo zotero > zotero.txt
does that make a zotero.txt
file appear?
Let's try something different:
Press the Windows key, type PowerShell
into the search bar, and press Enter. This will open a new PowerShell window.
In the PowerShell window, type the following command and press Enter to start output capture:
Start-Transcript -Path "$HOME\Desktop\transcript.txt"
This will create a new text file named transcript.txt on your desktop and start logging all console output to this file.
Now, you can start Zotero by typing the following command and pressing Enter:
& "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -ZoteroDebugText
Let zotero start and freeze, then quit Zotero. Logging to the powershell window will stop
Stop the transcription by typing the following command and pressing Enter:
Stop-Transcript
Then attach (not paste) transcript.txt
that is on your desktop here
Sure! Thanks and i Will try First thing after i came back to my computer and get back to you.

Hi! I'm back - I have tried the above/latest way you shared to acquire the debug file, please see attached (note that I have changed the file path because I put Zotero in D disc). I am not sure if it provided the right information?
Sorry, I had my powershell commands wrong, please delete transcript.txt from your desktop, and enter
Start-Transcript -Path "$HOME\Desktop\transcript.txt"
Start-Process -FilePath "D:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -ArgumentList "-console -ZoteroDebug"
wait for Zotero to start and freeze, then
Stop-Transcript
and attach the file here again.
note that I have changed the file path because I put Zotero in D disc
That is fine
I also encountered the freezing error with Better BibTex 6.7.159
Start-Transcript -Path "$HOME\Desktop\transcript.txt"
Start-Process -FilePath "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -ArgumentList "-console -ZoteroDebug"
When I ran it the first time, there is no useful output to the transcript. Whatever debugging information (which I could see) is frozen within the Zotero and cannot be piped back to the PowerShell. When I ran it again, it actually works and there is no error or freezing.
I think I have a way to capture the output. It's convoluted on windows, but there appears to be no way around that. Start cmd
, and type
"D:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -console -ZoteroDebugText
a second terminal window will pop up. In the top-left corner of that second terminal, click the icon, and from the menu, choose Edit
-> Select All
, click the icon again, choose Edit
-> Copy
, open notepad (or any text editor), paste
, and attach that here.
Nah...it showed me below error:
