Installing on macOS

What steps or special requirements do I need to install this library on a mac?

I would recommend using the tarball published at http://hyperdex.org/src/ and use the typical ./configure && make && make install. I have not tested it on a Mac, so I cannot speak to any specifics. If you encounter trouble I can try to help you debug it.
