Chrome @ Linux is laggy when using experimental WebGPU support

Open pablovela5620 opened this issue 9 months ago • 2 comments

Describe the bug

On my ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS machine, using rerun on chrome Version 134.0.6998.165 (Official Build) (64-bit) is basically unusable. The viewer slows to a crawl and becomes extremely laggy. This is not a problem on other webbrowsers (I tried with brave and things worked fine). I also enabled wgpu and things got a lot better on chrome (but still not perfect)

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. On a ubuntu chrome browser open https://rerun.io/viewer/pr/9421?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.rerun.io%2Fversion%2Fnightly%2Fexamples%2Farkit_scenes.rrd
  2. Should be clear from here as browser becomes unusable

Expected behavior

Rerun viewer should perform like normal with no lagging

To clarify: It's super laggy regardless but if you enable the experimental WebGPU support in Chrome Linux (it's still not stable there iirc, right?) then it does get a lot better?

Is there anything of interest in the browser console log that could help? 🤔

Did you observe this with previous Chrome / Rerun versions or is this an issue that started popping up at some point in time? If so do you have a rough idea when / on what version?

Don't have a setup for trying out myself at the moment, would be interesting if this happens on more machines.

Its super laggy unless I restart with WebGL support. As for logs, sadly nothing of note. I attached a screen shot of what it looked like.

I'm actually not too sure, I almost never use the chrome viewer on my linux machine so its unclear to exactly when it started hapepning. Most often I'm using either the webviewer on my mac or the native viewer.
