My plan is to keep it as a dependency of Ren'Py. I realized that I basically don't have the energy to support pygame - which has almost two decades of...
I'm not much of a windows expert, but I'd suggest using something like https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/procmon to see what it's accessing when it crashes.
You can try pygame_sdl2.import_as_pygame(), which will override the pygame imports with their pygame_sdl2 equivalents. I don't support mixing the two in the same process, and since I don't use it,...
I don't have experience building this with MSVC, so I can't help here. At this point, I'm not expecting pygame_sdl2 to be used outside of Ren'Py.
Can you give me some details? Like what program you're running, and what platform you are on?
I have no problems with this, and I'd be interested in potentially allowing debugging and other features.
Can you check out 7.5.2? There's a relevant fix here. (Do not set sys.setrecursionlimit - that's not the fix.)
I'll leave this open for a few days, but there's not much I can do until someone with the problem reports it.
I'd especially be interested if these uses are running a supported operating system, or are still on Windows XP or Vista.
Huh. I'd need someone with the problem to work with to diagnose this.
