Is the Mijia Gateway required? If so, any plans to do without it?

Since Mijia Gateway firmware v2 is a requirement... Does this mean that the sensors/switches can't be added without the gateway device?

If so, are there any plans to try to connect to the devices directly? Or is that a feature for a different plugin?
