Mentioning that Perl is a dependency could also be helpful.

Do you have a git installation without perl? As mentioned in #1 "If you have git, you have perl".

If you provide a patch I would be glad to add it.

You are right, Git appears to depend on Perl, at least on Ubuntu:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/git

In terms of basic installation instructions, I'm not sure, so I have no patch now. I presume it's just dropped in $PATH and made executable, but perhaps there's a more idiomatic way to handle git plugins.
