Rails 8 support

This project needs an update. Up to Rails 5.x is supported? it probable will die if there is no upgrade in the future.

Maybe use this year hacktoberfest to plan the upgrade?

Also, just tried to generate a new app and with Ruby 3.4.x fails a lot.

Yeah, this is not something that's going to work right now though I know @anitagraham has done a lot of work that I'd love to merge in that would get us further toward this goal, and I do want to get an update for it, but it has been hampered by available time. ☹️

Same thing applies to #3533 and #3528 really.
