Gradle-based projects under Java 17 try to launch Gradle daemon with VM option -XX:MaxPermSize=512m removed in Java 17

Running with Java 17 (now required?) with Gradle-based project fails because Gradle launcher command contains VM option -XX:MaxPermSize removed in Java 17.

Environment
  • Operating System: macOS
  • JDK version: Corretto 17.0.3.6.1
  • Visual Studio Code version: 1.69
  • Java extension version: 1.8.0
Steps To Reproduce
  1. Open Gradle-based project
  2. See Java project fail to be created
  3. Look at output for Language Support for Java:

@davidpcaldwell You can set your gradle daemon JVM with

"java.import.gradle.java.home": "your_gradle_jvm",

and/or your gradle daemon VM args

 "java.import.gradle.jvmArguments": "your_vmArgs",

@snjeza thanks for the workarounds. I can't really tell what the LS is doing with Gradle, though -- maybe it's using it to parse my build.gradle in order to determine the project structure, is my guess.

Anyway since I don't know what it's doing I don't know what appropriate values for java.import.gradle.java.home and (especially) java.import.gradle.jvmArguments might be. Can you point me in the right direction?

Otherwise, by default, I think I'll probably try to use JDK 17 and copy the existing command and just remove the offending JVM argument and see how that goes. But I can't do that this minute.

One clarification: I don't actually use Gradle to do anything with the project (it has its own build system) -- I added the Gradle configuration only to provide project structure information to the VSCode Java extension.

"java.import.gradle.jvmArguments": "-XX:MaxMetaspaceSize=256m -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError -Xms256m -Xmx1g",

@snjeza I can report that adding the setting you suggested to my user-level settings allowed my project to be imported successfully. So that's a workaround for now for people in this situation.

I'm not closing the bug as I assume users should not be required to do this, but I am able to proceed. Thank you!
