GUI Installer for RHEL

Open dgolovin opened this issue 7 years ago • 4 comments

it will be nice to have the installer also for Linux. it will allow to provide the same easy installation instructions for all platforms. (currently a blocker to mention usage of Dev Suite installer on hello-world page for Fuse). Migrated from https://issues.jboss.org/browse/JBDS-4590.

Is this being solved with a non-rpm installer, or will we be creating a copr rpm for fuse? Given the TINY numbers of people using devsuite on linux compared to windows, is this effort really justified?

That was just migrated from JIRA, it is not planned yet. The idea is to have RPM package for GUI installer, that would provide the way to install RPM (openjdk, cdk, devstudio) and none RPM components(Fuse, EAP, ...).

So you'd install an rpm, then use that gui tool to install more rpms? Ugh. Sounds like you're reinventing package management.

Oh, and now that the Linux world has embraced AppImage and is embracing Flatpak... well, there's two more options for overkill. :)

I would just avoid burning months to build something no one wants. Ping me on MM if you want to see the latest devstudio rpm install stats.

Having separate UI for installing RPMs is smth that people sold to RPM way will never use. Esp if it's mixture of RPM and non-RPM components this will be total no go as these kind of people will not blindly infect their systems with not easily removable components (aka custom installers).
