idea: optionally use network location services instead of GPS

Open TjrGithub opened this issue 7 years ago • 5 comments

Hi, in my area, the radio cells are close enough for a precise location fix, they also work indoors, and they consume less power than GPS. Would it be possible to add an option to use network location instead of, or in addition to, GPS?

Since GPS and network location have different accuracies, it might be a good idea to label the data points in the .gpx or to record two separate .gpx tracks (optionally a thrid, combined track). Thanks!

I found out Tiny Travel Tracker never records any data for me because my trips between buildings are shorter than the GPS time to first fix. (This is a side effect of firewalling the IZAT privacy leak.) However, network location services do provide timely location data.

That'd be a really awesome feature! I'm travelling a lot by train and, in newest trains (e.g. high-speed), GPS signal cannot be caught from inside the carriage. So either I lose the points or I have to stay in between two carriages all the trip…

I guess this must not be difficult to implement (at first, a simple option somewhere?) Thank you so much!

Any news on this feature? That'd be really really great, because it often happens to me to spend hours in trains without GPS signal, while other apps know perfectly where I am thanks to network location services. Thank you!

A reminder that this feature would be absolutely great, even if the location is not accurate at all. As long as the precision is below 20 kilometers, I'd be fine with it!

I use other location providers with MicroG. Sometimes they are really off though. So I would rather have no information than wrong one.

Please don't implement this feature without making it optional...
