Support for medals for speedrun mode

Open SniperGoth opened this issue 3 months ago • 3 comments

Something simple as the ability to set times on speedrun maps's cfg itself would make it much more interesting than it is currently. Having a set goal to accomplish or beat, naturally makes you want to try your hand at getting better and learning more paths and techniques, which in itself will make you a better player.

So, i propose this:

Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Eclipse (or, Author's time, idk)

I think it's a good incentive to play more of the mode, be it offline or with other players, as you have this number that's mocking you, wanting to see if you can get close to beating it.

We should also define difficulty standards for each medal, so that maps try to be consistent.

We should probably do something like Trackmania:

  • Bronze medal is basically always attainable, even if you fail at multiple checkpoints. The only reason you won't be getting it is when you're doing sightseeing instead of running 🙂
  • Silver medal is attainable by many beginners and nearly all intermediate players. You still have enough leeway to fail at one checkpoint.
  • Gold medal is attainable by a few beginners and most intermediate players. You generally have no leeway to fail at any checkpoint, unless you are very fast during the rest of the run (or the run is very long with many checkpoints).
  • Eclipse medal is the developer's time. This should be challenging to beat even for seasoned players, but should still feel attainable.

Bronze/Silver/Gold medals are rounded to the nearest second, while the Eclipse medal is an exact time meant to reflect a developer run.

Would be easy enough to allow people to submit a demo of their run to be eligible to be the Eclipse record. Not sure if that'd be high volume work or not though.

Probs would be wise to add the difficulty of the maps to the UI, too.

Easy, Intermediate, Hard, Impossible/Extreme/Torture.

Easy would be something like RElax,

Intermediate would be the default maps already included on either 1.x or 2.0, not too easy, not too difficult, takes between 3 to 5 to beat the first time.

Hard might take longer for first time players, 5 to 10 upwards.

Torture maps, as the name implies, require so much precision that it becomes pure torture to play through, as you need to be a master of the movement system to be able to pass any. Examples of such maps would be I wanna be the Eclipse, Escape Ultima, Euphoria, from the 1.x versions, or Pain, which i made for 2.1, with strict timings.
