Redesigned wheel spacer

Open kieraneglin opened this issue 2 years ago • 2 comments

Summary

This PR redesigns the wheel spacer by adding a small lip where it interfaces with the roller bearing. Before, the spacer would press against the inner race AND the seal, creating drag. This change ensures the spacer only presses against the inner race.

Outcome

It's definitely a noticeable change! I'm going for a large rectangular design and I'm hunting for any drag reduction possible since the moving portion is quite heavy.

Notes

This has a secondary effect of making the spacers directional - I've updated the build guide to reflect this (but I have a feeling this information can be put in a better spot)

As an aside, thank you for this project! I'm using it as inspiration but I'll be making some design/code changes as I go along. I'll open a PR if I come up with any useful changes or documentation!

Hey! Thanks for submitting these PRs! This looks good—are you able to give me the dimensions of the change so I can update the Fusion360 assembly?

Thank you! It's the same footprint as the original except for that lip. So it's 8mm on the outer diameter and 7mm tall overall. The lip is 0.5mm tall and has an outer diameter of 6.5mm. The inner diameter is unchanged

My printer was really struggling around the time I started working on this project which may explain why the prints look kinda rough (turns out my X-carriage was loose and I didn't notice). Either way, the STL of the new spacers has the same overall ID/OD/height, just with a lip added
