Blender 3.0+ Support

Hi,

I previously submitted a PR here with a lot of modifications, looking back on that a lot of them were tailored specifically to my use-cases. Since then, I've deviated a little bit more from the original.

Hence, I've cherry-picked the commits dealing with adding Blender 3.0+ support while staying backwards compatible, and left out the commits dealing with some specific use cases of mine.
