Question: Is it possible to have multiple types of transitions/animations between slides?

I wanted to switch from a normal left-to-right sliding animation to a fader animation for certain slides. However, from what I understand, this requires a render engine switch to custom. However, there is little documentation on the renderer, and what exactly a custom renderer looks like. I'm ~~probably~~ missing something here, but I can't find it. Is switching between different animations possible?
