Check when new update available since last checked

Hi,

I hope the title explains enough, lol Hear me out... please

So if the AutoUpdater JUST checked for an update as, lest say, version 1.1.0.1 in update.xml. Is it possible to check ONLY if any of those numbers or characters in version number has changed since last checked in my update.xml file. I don't want to spam my users with update check frequency whenever an Update is available. I want to notify them only when app starts... but then notify ONLY when a new version is available. I hope it makes sence.
