SC1000 MK2 black Jog. Would it help if I sand the surface?

Open SaccoSVD opened this issue 3 years ago • 2 comments

There is an area that the Jog is giving me troubles registering touch.

I also feel like sanding the outward ring while rotating the jog so it looks and feels more like a record. The exposed metal could look very good.

Would that help with the touch capacitive sensor?

Before you do anything I would reach out to portablismgear because one of the things they tried to improve upon in their version of the sc1000 is to make the jog wheel more stiff.

You would have slightly better conductivity with paint removed but it shouldn't be necessary. I would take the platter off before sanding it because that would be a lot of mechanical strain to put on the jog wheel. Just taking it appart and putting it back together might fix it.

I have never seen a sc1000 mk2 but there is a video for an now discontinued upgrade kit by portablismgear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gApZfPUx-CE If they are still building it in a similar way then I would put my money on the wire contact slipping. But portablismgear would probably be your best bet to diagnosing the issue.

My SC1000 MK2 is this one, an absolute beauty I must say:

https://portablismgear.com/sc1000-mk2-digital-scratch-instrument-mirror-purple.html

The unit comes with the dual bearings mod I believe (is one of the main features of the MK2) , the jog wheel is about 1mm thick and very rigid, no wobbling if I put pressure.

The problem occurs in a specific small area when I rotate the jog and my finger is in a specific spot. When I go back and forth in that area the capacitance seems to vary/fail and loses touch momentarily as I move slowly so I could pin point the spot, if I put more fingers in that spot it works better.

I think talking to portablismgear is perhaps not the best as they have this written as a warning:

Since the SC1000 is DIY build, an open source project and still in beta phase we would like to point out that we do not offer any warranty. The function will be checked and guaranteed before shipping.

I feel like going ahead and sanding some of the paint in a circular motion cause if it doesn't hurt I do really want to have to feel like I'm touching a record, it will help with grip too.

Question: I would like to check that "wire contact slippage"... where do I look once I open it?
