Width doesn't seem to influence the result?

I have added this line:

sheet.column_widths nil, 1, 1, nil, nil, nil, nil, nil, nil, nil, nil, nil, nil, nil

However no matter what I put instead of 1 nothing changes. Is this a known issue?
