Tree reading should allow node labels (numbers before the `:`) but ignore them. At the moment it just causes the tree reading to fail with an unhelpful error message.
If there is an issue with a tree, the message tends to be `Closing bracket missing`. It would be good if it could detect other issues (like missing branch lengths).
