TEAM2-374 Kovan and Ropsten testnet deprecations starting July 1

We noticed you still have some activity on the Kovan and/or Ropsten test networks. I wanted to let you know about a breaking change that will happen on these networks on July 1st in anticipation of the Merge. Here are the details:
What’s changing?
Alchemy will stop supporting traffic on Ropsten and Kovan on July 1st, 2022, since both of these networks will be officially deprecated by the Ethereum Foundation. While these testnets are still operational, there is a high chance they fail without warning, as they are no longer set to be actively maintained. We want developers on Alchemy to never be caught by surprise. That’s why we have set a concrete date for stopping support to allow for a smooth transition to Goerli, an actively supported testnet.
Why Kovan?
Kovan has been officially deprecated by the Ethereum community for well over a year. It is not receiving any network upgrades. Only two validators remain on the network and they may turndown very soon, at which point the network will halt.
Why Ropsten?
Ropsten will be officially deprecated after going through the Merge to Proof of Stake on June 8th as a testing exercise. There is a non-neglible risk of major network issues as Ropsten is the first large network to undergo the Merge to Proof of Stake on June 8th.
What should you do?
We highly recommend transitioning all testnet activity to Goerli ASAP, and definitely before July 1st, when Alchemy support will cease Ropstan and Kovan. Other testnets that are deprecated or sunset post Merge will cease to exist as accurate reflections of Mainnet. Application developers should #TestTheMerge on Goerli later this summer. Use our Goerli Faucet to grab some Goerli Eth!
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Always happy to help!

  • [ ] Remove Ropsten and Kovan from testnet settings
  • [ ] Update WC supported networks
  • [ ] Remove data and functions related specifically to Ropsten & Kovan
