I did not get back to this again since Arrrrcamp. Sorry :(

I have some time during the next couple of days. I just added this to my todo list. Hopefully I can get at least the PDF generation working.

benedikt avatar Jan 22 '15 18:01 benedikt

Ok, that was quick and easy. I created small build script to generate a PDF using DocRaptor.

Also if we set up Travis CI for the repository, it should (in theory) build the PDF automatically and push it to S3. Unfortunately I don't have admin privileges on this repository, so I can't set it up. (@anikalindtner: Can you take care of this?)

For now, this uses my own accounts of DocRaptor and S3. If we decide to move forward in this direction, we should try to get separate accounts on both services.

benedikt avatar Jan 22 '15 20:01 benedikt

DocRaptor is paid service. Are ok with that ?

krzysztofbialek avatar Jan 22 '15 20:01 krzysztofbialek

Sure! We can find sponsored money for that for sure <3

:+1:

benedikt avatar Jan 22 '15 20:01 benedikt

@benedikt done! I've set up Travis. Only step left: add .travis.yml file to root. can you do that?

anikalindtner avatar Jan 22 '15 20:01 anikalindtner

@anikalindtner Thank you! Let's see if it works as expected :)

benedikt avatar Jan 22 '15 20:01 benedikt

Wohoo! It works! Doesn't look pretty or has any content, yet… but it works! https://s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/railsgirls-workbook/workbook.pdf

benedikt avatar Jan 22 '15 21:01 benedikt

Hey all sorry.. this has been on my to-do list :D Overoptimistically I thought I could do this over xmas. NOT ..

I am going on a one - week holiday and then will get back to this! The workbooks are on my table.... There's another thread for this btw!

phenriettak avatar Jan 23 '15 11:01 phenriettak

@phenriettak I'm currently trying to replicate the latest (or what I think is the latest) version of the workbook in HTML/CSS in this repository. This should make it easier for everyone to edit the workbook.

Do you already have some changes in mind?

benedikt avatar Jan 23 '15 12:01 benedikt

Hey @benedikt I am trying to find the other thread - during the Coaches and organizers weekend we planned a whole bunch of stuff :)

phenriettak avatar Jan 23 '15 12:01 phenriettak

Here is the whole "plan" :D https://github.com/railsgirls/FrozenRailsWeekendHelsinki/issues/11

phenriettak avatar Jan 23 '15 12:01 phenriettak

@phenriettak Thank you!

So the plan is still to move the workbook from InDesign to a more accessible format like the approach in this repository?

Unfortunately, I don't have InDesign… can someone please export the current version to PDF for me? :)

@viddity: I see you're quite active on the workbook issue as well. What about we meet up and get some work done on this?

benedikt avatar Jan 23 '15 13:01 benedikt

@benedikt !! :-)! wasn't really much what i did. i can and will export the pdf on the WE. Unfortunately i am too deadline-busy at work until March/April to allow me to make a helpfull promise here, won't be able to invest myself in concepting, which is most needed, i guess. sorry people!! but, am happy to do some stupid tasks for it.

viddity avatar Jan 23 '15 14:01 viddity

Ugh, I also kind of dropped this / did not manage to get as much work done as expected. thanks @benedikt for the great work, it looks like this might make it muuuuch easier for everyone (as with InDesign there are always problems with conflicting versions, etc..)

alicetragedy avatar Jan 23 '15 17:01 alicetragedy

@viddity maybe I can take up where you left off for the checklist.. as I was supposed to... ops :/

alicetragedy avatar Jan 23 '15 17:01 alicetragedy

hey everyone! I thought I would ask about giving this issue another jolt of life.

Where can we start the files to hold all the new information, and where? We could all start contributing and pushing updates, if we perhaps decide on the central files we will be pushing too.

sareg0 avatar May 25 '15 15:05 sareg0

Hi @sareg0,

All the content is in this file: https://github.com/railsgirls/workbook/blob/master/source/index.html.erb The styling isn't done and could use some love, though.

Check out the current version of the workbook generated from this repository here: https://s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/railsgirls-workbook/workbook.pdf

benedikt avatar May 25 '15 15:05 benedikt

I would suggest to first think about the concept of every single page (what stays, what goes) and work on the copy, maybe in simple text files.. and once we have an idea of what information/text goes in there, fill it all into the html file @benedikt created. :+1:

(Mainly because we all know how annoying it is to make changes to text when html / formatting / markup is involved)

alicetragedy avatar May 25 '15 16:05 alicetragedy

awesome, well we'll work on getting some stuff prepped, and get it checked beforehand, but @benedikt and I will meet online on Friday, and get as much done as possible towards getting this lovely 'little' task finished. Any people who would like to join just hit us up. Otherwise we'll just see what we get done.

sareg0 avatar May 25 '15 16:05 sareg0

@sareg0 cool. I might be able to join, I will know more about it closer to the day but I would be happy to help you and @benedikt out with this. And thanks for getting the ball rolling again..

alicetragedy avatar May 25 '15 16:05 alicetragedy

Feeling massively bad for not having done my share :( :( :( :( :( What time are you catching up on Friday @sareg0 ? Could be able to join, always nicer to work together :)

phenriettak avatar May 25 '15 20:05 phenriettak

I think we're just gonna start about 11:00am (GMT+2), and just be online the whole day, and be there to chat and throw ideas back and forth. See how much we can get done, if not all of it. I'm not sure what method we're going to use yet, but we could always create an IRC channel, and do a hangout if needed.

sareg0 avatar May 26 '15 11:05 sareg0

really sorry, but i won't be able to join on friday ...
