Organizer "whitelist"
Currently, any new event is assumed to be spam until proven otherwise. This creates a bottleneck (each event must be approved by hand), is not scalable, diminishes organizer autonomy, and (likely) discourages adoption of Bridgetroll by new organizers.
Meetup had a list of "approved organizers" that was relatively easy to get on. Bridgetroll does not. This story proposes restoring the whitelist of trusted organizers, thus eliminating the bottleneck.
I think this is a reasonable idea.
I wouldn't be interested in "restoring" the list that was on Meetup (there are about a million approved posters to the SF Ruby meetup, and many of them I would not want to be able to create Bridge Troll events without review). I would want to add people as approved organizers moving forward.
One thing to note is that we've added functionality so that chapter leaders can approve events for their chapters. This should reduce the bottleneck considerably, but we're still in the process of rolling this out. (For example, we probably still need to add @kmolo as a chapter leader for MobileBridge SF.)
up to my eyeballs in the CodePath University iOS pilot at City College of SF, so not doing anything for MobileBridge right now, but you can add me as a chapter leader for MobileBridge SF and point me toward how/where I would see these pending events.
The chapter leader approval feature would definitely help. I also like it because it's a move away from centralized control and towards empowerment of people in their own communities. (I think this is really important, for both logistical and moral reasons.)
What do you mean by "still rolling this out"? Is that technological (the feature isn't fully available yet) or social (not everyone has the news or has acted upon it)?
@sidhene technical and social — there are chapters where we still need to backfill the data of setting exactly who the chapter leaders are, and social in that we need to tell the chapter leaders that they can approve events for their chapters.
